Concurrent with the conference on Saturday, we will host the following two workshop sessions:
"Meeting the needs of L2 and HL learners in mixed classes without sending mixed messages"
The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with ideas and resources for teaching Spanish language courses where both heritage learners and foreign language learners are enrolled. The workshop will consist of an overview of best practices and research-informed pedagogical strategies. We will discuss grouping strategies, peer collaboration, selection of course topics, effectiveness of explicit instruction, and provision of feedback.
Workshop Organizer & panelist:
“Issues in Developing a Heritage Language Program”
The goal of this workshop is to provide advice and guidance on different components for the creation (or improvement) of quality language programs to deliver an optimal learning environment for Spanish heritage language learners. The workshop will consist of panelists who will share information on the successes and challenges in the creation of a heritage language program, the development and implementation of a placement exam, and conducting a needs-analysis for course development. The panelists will speak briefly for 15 to 20 minutes, and then they will entertain questions from the audience.
